SSCMS Summer School

Four-day non-residential chamber music course for young people aged 17+

Friends' Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton

The aim of the SSCMS Summer School is to promote high quality and enjoyable chamber music making in a relaxed and non-competitive environment. Each participant is assigned to a chamber group, which is chosen according to ability and experience. In addition to chamber music coaching, everyone is involved in a large ensemble and there is individual coaching on chamber music parts. The course incorporates a public concert given by the SSCMS tutors; The Regency Ensemble on Tuesday 26th August and closes with a participants’ concert on Friday 29th.

Information

Applicants
The courses are primarily for bowed string instruments with a few spaces available for wind and brass and piano. Participants are expected to be between 16 and 21 years old and to have reached ABRSM Grade 8 standard or above. We welcome applications from individuals or pre-formed groups. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis; please apply early to avoid disappointment.

Repertoire
As the duration of the course is short, it is essential that parts are learnt thoroughly before the first day. Music will be sent out by the beginning of July and we encourage everyone to take their parts to their teachers to help with the preparation. If you have any repertoire preferences, we will do our best to accommodate them although this cannot always be guaranteed.

Fees
The course fee is £160, which includes free entry to the tutors’ concert. A deposit of £40 is payable on application and will be refunded if we are unable to accommodate you. The balance is due by Saturday 12th July 2008. If you would prefer to pay in four instalments, please specify this on your form.

Location
The course takes place at the Friends' Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton. BN1 1AF.

2007 Repertoire

Participants are encouraged to find their own chamber music parts; most libraries stock standard chamber music repertoire. If you have problems finding your part, please let me know and I will help.
